Primary Care Week, a student-led effort that celebrates the importance of primary care providers to the health care system, will culminate Wednesday, March 21, in a keynote address by James L. Holly, M.D., a family physician who advocates for a patient-centered approach.

Dr. Holly’s keynote address, “Progress in Primary Care,” is just one aspect of Primary Care Week at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. A number of discussion groups were held throughout the week on topics ranging from serving vulnerable populations to the future of primary care.

Poster session
An exhibition and poster session, to be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside the Pestana Lecture Hall, will showcase the efforts of student groups and San Antonio community organizations who are addressing primary care needs.

Keynote address
Dr. Holly’s keynote address will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. March 21 in the Pestana Lecture Hall at the UT Health Science Center, 7703 Floyd Curl Drive.

Dr. Holly is a 1973 graduate of the School of Medicine at the Health Science Center. He served as president of the School of Medicine’s Alumni Association from 2006 to 2010.

Earlier this year, the main auditorium at the Health Science Center was renovated and named for Dr. Holly after Wayne A. Reaud, chairman and founder of the Beaumont Foundation of America, paid tribute to Dr. Holly by making a $1 million gift in his honor.

Dr. Holly is chief executive officer of Southeast Texas Medical Associates, which is dedicated to providing quality and cost-effective health care in Southeast Texas through multispecialty, patient-centered clinics.

Primary Care Week was organized by a new organization called Primary Care Progress, which is comprised mostly of students and is supported by faculty. The group works to promote the primary-care aspects of health care delivery.
